According to Austin Price, of VolQuest.Com, Tennessee now has another vacancy on their coaching staff. Price reports that the Vols’ inside linebackers coach, Kevin Sherrer, has decided to leave the University of Tennessee for the NFL’s New York Giants.

Sherrer joined the coaching staff at the University of Tennessee when Jeremy Pruitt was first putting his original coaching staff together after the conclusion of the 2017 season which resulted in the termination of former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones. Sherrer was originally hired as a co-defensive coordinator for the Volunteers but was demoted to inside linebackers coach to start Pruitt’s 2nd year as the head coach in Knoxville in 2018. Sherrer was also in charge of the Vols’ special teams, which thrived in 2018 as it featured Brent Cimaglia, one of the most accurate kickers in the SEC.

Sherrer coached six linebackers selected in the NFL Draft over the course of the last six seasons and won two national championships with Nick Saban at Alabama. He had collegiate coaching stops at South Alabama, the University of Alabama, and the University of Georgia, in addition to being the former defensive coordinator at Hoover High School from 2005 to 2009.

Sherrer’s departure creates the second opening on Tennessee’s staff, the other occurring after running backs coach David Johnson chose to leave UT for the same position at Florida State. Where Tennessee will turn to fill those vacancies remains yet to be seen, but you can stay up to date with the coaching searches by subscribing to Volunteer Roadshow for free.
