KNOXVILLE, TENN— Tennessee starting defensive lineman Darel Middleton, 23, was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of domestic assault and public intoxication, according to a report from Trey Wallace of Fox Sports Knoxville. The University of Tennessee told Wallace, “We are aware of the incident and are gathering information.” He will receive a pre-trial release later in the day.

Middleton, a senior, transferred from East Mississippi Community College to Tennessee last season — where he showed tremendous potential on a defensive line that lost multiple talented seniors from the season before. In his first season on Rocky Top, Middleton started 6 and appeared in all 13 of the Volunteers’ match-ups.

He finished his junior season with 28 total tackles, 2 tackles for losses, and a sack — in addition to a blocked extra point that proved to be monumental in the Vols’ 17-13 victory over Kentucky.

A native of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the 6’7’’ 311-pound defensive lineman held offers from Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky, but decided to return to his home state to play football. Middleton committed to the Volunteers on April 4th, 2018, and enrolled at the University on May 28th, 2019.
