Preview and Prediction: BYU

Sep 4, 2019 | VOL Articles, VOL Football 2019, VOL Football Game Previews

Tennessee’s 38-30 loss to Georgia State was one of the most embarrassing losses in the history of College Football, but as the old saying goes, life goes on. It’s time to move on to Tennessee’s must win game against Brigham Young on Saturday under the lights. First off, we at Volunteer Roadshow are greatly encouraging all fans to show up and cheer on the Vols against BYU. In order to take down the Cougars, they will need help from their home crowd. But as for the game itself there is no denying its importance. If the Volunteers fall to BYU it’s almost impossible to imagine them making a Bowl Game. While if they come out of this match-up victorious, the Georgia State game starts looking more and more like one bad game.

We at the Volunteer Roadshow have asked our staff members to make their final picks for the matchup, but before we reveal those there are some things Tennessee has to do to win the game. First off, the most important improvement Tennessee must make by far is not on offense or defense but on the coaching staff. Tennessee’s coaching has to improve if the Vols want any chance to win this game. Jeremy Pruitt almost looked like a statue in the Volunteers’ 38-30 loss to the 2-10 Panthers of Georgia State. That’s something that has to change, Jeremy Pruitt has to show some emotion in this matchup to try and motivate his team. Tennessee just can’t afford to get out-coached again. The 2nd most important improvement Tennessee needs to make is the ability to lock down the QB’s ability to scramble. In the Vols loss to Georgia State, Tennessee had numerous plays where they locked everything down, except for the QB leading Ellington to scramble for the first down. BYU’s starting quarterback, Zach Wilson also causes problems for the Vols. We’re not exaggerating when we say Zach Wilson has wheels, if Tennessee does not take away his ability to run around early he will have his way with the Tennessee defense. Another improvement Tennessee must correct is on defense. Tennessee gave up 38 points against a team that was picked to finish 2nd to last in the Sun Belt, that’s unacceptable. If Tennessee’s defense performs the same way they did against Georgia State, not only will Tennessee not win this game but they will get absolutely demolished. Tennessee must be able to get pressure on Wilson, and they have to lock down the run game if they want to have any chance at winning. The final improvement Tennessee needs to improve at is the offensive line, Jarrett Guarantano HAS to have time to throw for the Volunteers, if BYU gets penetration and can put pressure on Guarantano it will lead to turnovers.

There are countless improvements Tennessee needs to make, but those were just some keys to the game that we found most important. Here’s how our staff thinks the game will play out.
