Former Florida Commit Kamar Wilcoxson Commits to Tennessee

Not even 24 hours after the Vols landed a huge cornerstone for Jeremy Pruitt’s future defense, they’ve struck gold again. 4-star safety Kamar Wilcoxson gave his pledge to the Vols 2021 class earlier today and it couldn’t have come at a better time. He becomes the 3rd highest rated commit in this class and gives the Vols their best commitment from a projected defensive back so far.

Wilcoxson, originally from Georgia, will be playing for IMG Academy this coming fall and will no doubt be a leader on their always star-studded team. IMG is one of the premier producers of talent in the entire country. Players from across the country travel to Bradenton every year to suit up for the Ascenders.

At 6’1” 190lbs, Wilcoxson already possesses great size for his age, and has the frame to continue to add muscle in the coming years. Honestly, I could see him playing safety, corner, or possibly even the STAR position in Derrick Ansley’s defensive scheme. Versatility is the name of the game in college football, and that rings even more true in the SEC.

On tape, he displays great speed covering sideline to sideline, and isn’t afraid to pop a receiver coming across the middle of the field. Some defensive back prospects don’t possess the ball skills you’d like to see this early on, but Wilcoxson shows out in that area. He is able to climb the ladder against receivers on the deep passes down the field and has the quickness to make guys miss on an interception return. It’ll be interesting to see if IMG uses his talents on the offensive side of the ball any this season, because his tape shows him making plays at the wide receiver position as well.

When I watch him, I see flashes of the types of plays that Eric Berry used to make in the Vols secondary. I won’t say he IS the next Eric Berry because that’s not fair to him at this point in the process. But, on tape, you definitely see shades of the former All-American and Thorpe Award winner. I’d like to see him stay at safety at college and possibly pair up with current Vol Jaylen McCollough and signee Keshawn Lawrence to form a terrifying defensive backfield for the next few years of the Vol defense.

As for this class, the last two days show the type of groundwork that Jeremy Pruitt and his staff are laying currently across the country. To pull two nationally recognized players is one thing, but to do it in consecutive days against SEC rivals just makes it even sweeter. Landing the top player in Alabama yesterday, Dylan Brooks, and former Florida commit, Wilcoxson, show that the Vols improvement is definitely being noticed.
