Speedy North Carolina Running Back Commits To Tennessee

by | Mar 30, 2020 | Reporting

Tennessee has landed a commitment from Jaylen Wright, a speedy running back from Durham, North Carolina. Wright announced his commitment on Monday through a video he released via Twitter.

According to 247Sports, the young running back currently holds 8 offers, from Miami, North Carolina State, Syracuse, Rutgers, Arizona State, Liberty, Florida Atlantic, and Cambell. The member of the class of 2021 is also bound to gain more offers as his recruitment develops.

Standing at 5’11’’ and weighing in at 187-pounds, Wright is known for his incredible speed on the field. Because of his incredible talent, he’s a nightmare for defenders to catch when he gets into space, despite his below average size. Due to his smaller frame, Tennessee may want to bulk him up before he sees the field, but his pure speed could get him off the bench and into the game rather quickly.

Last season, Wright led his team in rushing with 89 carries for 901 yards, averaging 10.1 yards per rush, and finding the end zone five times. This quickly caught the attention of former Tennessee running back turn coach Jay Graham, who used his deep ties in the Tar Heel State to land Wright.

Wright is the 7th recruit to join Tennessee’s 2021 class, along with 4-star wide receiver Jordan Mosley, 3-star running back Elijah Howard, 3-star safety Edwin White, 3-star ATH Nate Evans, 3-star cornerback Jay Jones, 3-star defensive tackle Isaac Washington, and defensive end Darrell Jackson — who is currently unranked by 247Sports.

The offense struggled to score points, the defensive issues were still there, and coaching mistakes certainly did not help either. In the position the Vols have put themselves in with the performances on the field, this season looks to be lost. The time is now for head coach Jeremy Pruitt to look towards the future and turn this team over to the players he brought in to help bring this program out of the pit of despair it has been stuck in for years. This starts with Harrison Bailey taking over as the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season and beyond.
