Trey Smith’s NFL Draft Announcment Set For Thursday

Today was a very eventful day for the future of Tennessee’s offensive line as reports surfaced that former long time Vol Commit, and legacy recruit, Cade Mays intends to transfer from Athens to Knoxville and join his little brother, Cooper Mays, on Rocky Top. The move was a very surprising one that sent shock waves throughout the College Football world, but tomorrow the Vols will receive, what some consider even bigger news.

The University of Tennessee announced that the program’s star offensive lineman, Trey Smith, will be announcing whether or not he will enter his name into the 2020 NFL Draft tomorrow at 1:00ET via a press conference: “Tennessee football offensive lineman Trey Smith will hold a press conference to announce a decision on his future on Thursday at 1p.m. at the Ray & Lucy Hand Digital Studio. Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt will also participate in the conference.” Make no mistake about it, if the former top recruit chooses to remain at Tennessee for his 4th, and final, year of eligibility the Volunteers would be destined to have one of the best squads upfront in the entire conference.

Smith was asked about the Draft following the conclusion of Tennessee’s stunning come from behind victory over the Indiana Hoosiers, but downplayed the decision, “I’m just focused on getting healthy, getting everything right, making sure I’m on the right path…” Smith went on to tell the media, “We’ll just take our time with it, it’s a major decision.”

While it is almost a given that Smith has the potential to be an early-round draft pick, the main concern for NFL teams are his long history with blood clots in his lungs. Smith was diagnosed with the blood clots back at the beginning of 2018 but was able to be ready for the season in August. Smith started 7 games during Jeremy Pruitt’s first season at Tennessee but that would all come crashing down when the Vols found out some truly shocking news. The blood clots had returned in Smith’s lungs ending his Sophomore season. Without their leader upfront, the Volunteers were unable to get to a Bowl Game and finished the season 5-7.

Despite the major setback, Smith was yet again determined to get back into Neyland Stadium. After months of hard work and recovery, Smith was able to achieve this and put together another unbelievable year. Smith had an All-SEC performance and was thought to be one of the Volunteers’ best players on the offensive side of the ball by many. In other words, Smith’s talent is not in question at this time, his health is the primary concern.

Regardless of the decision that Smith makes public tomorrow, there is no doubt that he has a very bright future ahead of him if he can handle his health issues. VolunteerRoadshow.Com will have full coverage of Smith’s decision following the conclusion of the announcement at 1p.m.
