Top 100 DL target Omari Thomas enjoys ‘crazy atmosphere’, talks ‘comfortable’ visit

by | Oct 27, 2019

The Vols have been pushing for four-star lineman Omari Thomas since Jeremey Pruitt arrived in Knoxville. Thomas is one of the most coveted prospects in the country and the best prospect in the rich recruiting grounds of Memphis. Thomas has been to Knoxville on his fair share of trips in the last year and a half, but this weekend’s official visit was different. The Grind City star talks about the experience here.

Thomas has long been making trips to Knoxville, and the environment is one of his favorite traditions. He said, “the environment is crazy. It is one of the craziest.”

Thomas took in the Vols 41-21 win over South Carolina on Saturday, and he got the opportunity to experience the crazy enviroment in full effect. He said the favorite part of his visit was how “the atmosphere was crazy.”

Thomas took in the game with several top targets and commits, and he spent plenty of time talking with them. He said, “I got a chance to spend time with Jay Hardy, Keshawn Lawrence, and Tyler Baron.”

Thomas said the conversation between the group was, “just talking about how cool it would be (to team up), and the potential the program could have.”

Lawrence told Vol Recruiting Reports in a recent interview that he was recruiting pretty much everybody in Memphis. He specifically highlighted Thomas.

Earlier in the week, the Vols grabbed commitments from the Whitehaven Trio out of Memphis. Thomas was asked about this, and he said, “I am glad for them, but I have to continue to do what is best for me.”

The top 100 defensive lineman came away impressed with Tennesse’s effort up front. He said, “They played really good. It was really great all together. The defensive line played well and showed improvement.”

The message from Tennessee’s staff has been consistent all the way through for Thomas, and it is not just one that he communicates with. He said, “all of the coaches really. They just want me to come in and be an early contributor.”

It is possible that the Vols made a move for the Briarcrest standout coming out of the weekend. He said, on what was different about this visit opposed to others was, “I just felt really comfortable.”

Thomas still has some visits and a couple of months left ahead of him before he makes a decision, as things stand. When asked if he still planned to announce at the 2020 All-American Bowl on January 4th, he said, “as of right now.”

Thomas is rated as the Nation’s 101st overall prospect, No. 9 DT, and No.3 prospect from the state of Tennessee.
