Volunteer Roadshow’s Week 10 Players of the Week

by | Oct 30, 2019

Each week our staff votes on the offensive, defensive, and special teams player of the week and after a quality victory over South Carolina, our staff had to make some tough decisions on who we would name the players of the week; here’s what we came up with.

Offensive Player of the Week: Jauan Jennings (WR, #15)

This one’s obvious, right? With 7 catches, 174 yards, and 2 touchdowns Jennings was almost unanimously elected this week’s offensive player of the game. Jennings did it all, he took snaps at the quarterback position from the wildcat, he made unreal catches on the 3rd and long, he simply was not going to allow Tennessee to lose this football game. One of the moments that stood out to us came on a third and long, Jennings told the team in the huddle that he had their backs and when Guarantano tossed the ball up to him in the endzone, he was blasted. Jennings absorbed the hit and held onto the football for the touchdown. His personality, leadership, and outstanding performance won him this week’s award.

Defensive Player of the Week: Daniel Bituli (LB, #35)

This one was a given as everyone on our staff selected Daniel Bituli as the defensive player of the game. Racking up a team-leading 15 tackles including one tackle for loss, he served as a leader on the defensive side of the ball similar to Jauan Jennings’ leadership on offense. Ironically, his biggest play came on special teams when he blocked Joseph Charleston’s punt and recovered it in the endzone for a touchdown to essentially slam the door on a Carolina Comeback.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Marquez Callaway (PR, #1)

This one was extremely tight between Daniel Bituli, who put the game on ice with his blocked punt, and Marquez Callaway, who gave Tennessee it’s first lead of the game with his 65-yard punt return for a touchdown. In the end, Callaway won this one by a single vote; his return changed the tone of the game and tipped the scoreboard in Tennessee’s favor after South Carolina got a monumental 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the game. Everyone knows Callaway’s talent and potential as a punt returner, and Vol fans really wish they would see him attempt to return those kick more often because when he does, he’s one of the most talented PRs in the country.

These were our selections for this week’s edition, let us know yours by commenting them below. Tune in next week as we select the players of the week after Tennessee meets up with the UAB Blazers.
